Fou Lafine (鳳(フォウ)ラフィーネ) is a priest in the Machine Empire and one of the four legendary Spirit Generals. He corresponds the South and is the donor of the B't Je t'aime.

Background[]

Young-fou

A young Fou

Fou grew up in war-torn Sodom, where he was orphaned at a young age when his parents died in a bombing. This drove Fou into becoming a self-reliant and aloof teenager, having only a girl named Lily and her brother Quattro as friends.[1] Even at a young age, Fou was a virtuoso, skilled at playing the violin, organ and harmonica. He used to perform at church solely for the food, and he admittedly hated religion because of its passivity to end the war.[1]

After the death of Lily, Fou and Quattro were taken in by Machine Empire soldiers and were trained to be warriors, unaware of the fact that the war and the destruction of their hometown was orchestrated by the Machine Emperor himself.[2] Along with other orphans Ron and Karen, Fou believed that the Emperor's mission was to make "true peace".[3] He eventually became one of the revered Spirit Generals and the donor of the phoenix B't Je t'aime.

Although Fou has held the Machine Emperor in high regard, likening him to a god, Misha mentions that his loyalty has become questionable since Karen defected from the Empire[4], during which Fou voluntarily let her escape. As a result, Fou's military rank was demoted from major to lieutenant.[3]

Aside from being a warrior for the Machine Empire, Fou Lafine also runs a church where he takes care and give refuge to orphaned children. Fou is shown to be a religious man as he often recites verses from the bible and that he is passionate about taking care of the children in his orphanage.[5]

Abilities[]

Though not shown to be as skilled in martial arts as Ron, Fou is still a capable fighter that he is able to match him during their brief fight. He is an excellent tactician and has incredible agility in melee combat as seen in his fight with Leon.

He is also able to defeat Teppei Takamiya during their first match with relative ease thanks to his weapon and B't.

  • Funeral Bow is Fou's primary weapon as well as instrument in playing the violin. The bow has the ability to emit high voltage of electricity enough to reduce a human into ashes.[5]
  • Fortune Symphonic is an amplified version of Je t'aime's Deadly Carol achieved when Fou simultaneously plays a specific type of song on his violin. According to Fou, Fortune Symphonic allows him to connect psychologically and emotionally to those who would hear it.[6]

Notes[]

  • The design of Fou's long robe was simplified from its manga counterpart; from floral outlines and intricacies reminiscent of ceremonial attires worn by medieval royalty, in the anime it was changed to plain shades of purple.
    • Also in the manga, Fou wore a cross as a pendant. In the anime, he wears a triangle pendant. In both cases, they were given to him by Lily.
  • Fou is French for "crazy". Lafine may be from the Italian phrase "la fine" meaning "the end", somewhat reflective of Fou's fanatically grim personality.
  • In the Spanish dub, Fou's name is changed to Falco.
